One of New Zealand’s great walks and SO worth it! Absolutely stunning scenery. We did it at the end of winter so we got the snowy mountain-tops and beautifully sunny and clear views of the surrounding landscape.

In winter I would definitely recommend a guided tour, not only do you need some specialist equipment but you really want an expert to tell you about the wind and other weather conditions at the top.

we went with Terry from Tongariro Guided Walks and I don’t think I could have been any more impressed!

He was organised, safety conscious and friendly. He made sure everyone could go at their own pace and even made me a hot chocolate while we had lunch at the red crater!

He provided all the specialist equipment (crampons and ice axes) but also rucksacks, walking boots, hats and an array of other outdoor clothing!!
